Glossary One

Roen ven Dorn
Roen is a 12-year old Zhadran girl, the only daughter of Knightlord Doryan ven Dorn and his late wife Raelisanne of Vertaes. Roen is a tomboy through and through, eager to prove her physical worth against her older brothers; she is honest, steadfast and stubborn, and just about as skilled as a girl her age could be in horseback and combat. Roen has gray eyes, fair, freckled skin, and copper-red hair usually bound in a single long braid. In the tale’s first chapter, in the early morning hours outside the walls of Dorn Keep, Roen attempts to complete the riding trial her mother conquered eighteen years ago, but ultimately fails, resulting in a crash that leaves her unconsciousness.

Talcey Haeredson
Talcey is the 10-year old son of Haered Amborson, the Dorn Keep Stablemaster. Talcey is short and chubby, with perpetually messy sandy blond hair and light hazel eyes. Talcey is Roen’s best friend, and though she sees him as “round and clumsy and full of fret,” he is Roen’s staunchest ally, exhibiting bravery when needed. Talcey talks a lot, which Roen tolerates—and even appreciates, as she prefers to let others talk.

Haered Amborson

Stablemaster Haered is the 44-year old Dorn Keep Stablemaster, and the father of Talcey. Haered is a sober, sturdy man with kind eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. He arrived at Dorn Keep eighteen years ago in the retinue of Roen’s lady mother, Raelisanne. Since Raelisanne’s death, Haered has acclimated himself to the ways of Zhadran (and Dorn Keep) life, doing what he can to help care for Raelisanne’s children.

Doryan “the Younger” ven Dorn
Doryan the Younger is Roen’s eldest brother, and heir to Dorn Keep. He is described as a younger, slimmer version of their Knightlord father, Doryan the Elder, with the same dark hair and deep-set eyes. We meet Doryan having recently returned from afar, bringing with him a young man who intends to court Roen. Roen is wary of Doryan, not trusting him, and he exhibits little more than cursory care for his sister, a casual disdain more often displayed.
