CROWN’S REACH
Crown’s Reach is a powerful union of feudal nations located in the southern portion of the northwestern continent, Caelarn. Commonly called the “Northern Kingdoms” by its southern neighbors (ignoring the fact that the larger, more northern domain of Midgardr exists north of it), Crown’s Reach is less often called “The Ten Kings,” a nod to its original consolidation over 700 years ago. It has traditionally been comprised of ten separate, sovereign kingdoms, though the roster has changed many times over the years, and sometimes there are less than ten nations in the union, and other times more.
Currently, 11 nations are formally recognized as sovereign. The contemporary roster includes the nations of Palador, Cymry, Gault, Vertaes, Lacéne, Danthrane, Flandre, Burgun-Dach, Melanois, Empyrion, and Waldonia. Additionally, the Isle of Mát exists as a “shared sovereign territory” in the middle of the Storming Sea, though the isle claims no ruler. There are also a handful of other leal states, duchies, and baronies existing within Crown’s Reach, some petitioning yearly for sovereign recognition. These include the duchies of Zhadra, Baltanya, and Ravenna, as well as the western Free Dales, who have been attempting to secede from the nation of Vertaes for over thirty years.
The wealthy merchant nation of Solvos has been elected to the roster more than a few times, but has thus far declined the honor of actually joining. Additionally, the elfin nations of Caldan’onae (Aedri elves) and Sindathlar (Sylvanni elves), as well as the dwarven sovereignty of Ubothor are all founding members of the alliance, but each has ceased sending ambassadors to any of the annual summits. (They never actually formally withdrew, but most nations have forgotten about the three non-human nations almost entirely, as human memories are short. And in fairness, Ubothor has not been heard from in over 200 years.)
Ruddy-skinned Angols make up a bulk of the human populace in Crown’s Reach, with a smattering of pale Fulk in the northwest, and olive-hued Prosoli on the southern coast. Languages spoken in Crown’s Reach are many; the number of diverse languages are so great, in fact, that they would be too numerous to mention here, however the Custom (common) Tongue is known by over ninety percent of the populace, owing to the availability for safe travel and plentiful trade between most nations.
