Danthrane’s proper name is Danthrandoinen, but few people outside its natives use the elongated formal. Established around 300 SVC, Danthrane was originally part of a Midgardr coalition that coordinated raids of Crown’s Reach; they staked their claim on Danmargen, and broke ranks with their Fulkinrohr allies and forged a pact with a mighty clan of dwarves, and haven’t budged since. Few can rival Danthrane as a naval power in the west, though it hardly ever gets to prove this in peaceful times. Its chief mercantile rival is Flandre to the south, and Danthrane is sorely outmatched in both numbers and charm; the smooth-talking Flandres typically make friends faster than the temperamental Danae. Danthrane would use a more aggressive sort of retaliation against its smug southern neighbor, but for the Northlaw Pact. Danae are traditionally loath to break their word—not to mention the fact that committing their ships to the south would leave them open to invasion from aggressive Fulkinrohr in the north. (It’s not easy being of northern intent whilst living in the south.) Danthrane was until recently heralded as “Thunder’s Son”; the change to “Sea Sovereign” was mandated by reigning King Svaldson II, said by supporters to remind other nations of Danthrane’s naval prowess, and by detractors as a largely empty boast. (It is also seen by adherents of the Aegyrn faith as a sign that the rulers of Olde Danthrandoinen have truly broken with the old ways.)
